Floor Buffers vs Burnishers: Which One is Right for You?

Floor Buffers vs Burnishers: Which One is Right for You?

If you're in the market for floor cleaning equipment, you might have encountered some confusion between Floor Buffers and Burnishers. While they may look similar at first glance, these machines serve very different purposes. Let's break down the key differences to help you make the right choice for your needs.

Floor Buffers: The Versatile Workhorses

Often called floor machines, low-speed machines, side-by-side machines, or swing machines, floor buffers are your go-to equipment for various cleaning tasks. Typically operating between 150-175 RPM (or both in a dual-speed beast), these versatile rotary machines can handle everything from daily cleaning to heavy-duty scrubbing.

Key Features:

  • Two-wheel design for transportation;
  • Side-to-side movement
  • Multiple pad/brush compatibility for different tasks
  • Ideal for chemical cleaning applications
  • Standard 110V power supply (perfect for most commercial settings)

Think of a floor buffer as your cleaning Swiss Army knife: It can scrub hard floors and tiles, clean grout, strip floor finish, or perform gentle cleaning on delicate surfaces (even carpets!), all depending on the pad or brush you choose.

Floor Burnishers: The Shine Specialists

Burnishers have one specialized purpose: creating that mirror-like shine on finished floors. Running at high speeds (1,500-2,500 RPM), these machines are designed specifically for restoring gloss to floor finishes.

Pro Tip: Want a quick way to remember? Burnishers are meant to burnish, or to burn the floor finish. Easy, right?

Key Features:

  • These ones will usually have four wheels for operation stability and transportation
  • Forward and backward movement only
  • No chemical use required
  • Available in different power configurations for various facility needs

Important Distinctions to Remember

  1. Movement Pattern:
    • Floor buffers: Side-to-side motion with wheels suspended in the air
    • Burnishers: Forward/backward only, with two of four wheels always on the floor for safety
  2. Chemical Usage:
    • Floor buffers: Compatible with various cleaning chemicals
    • Burnishers: Used on clean, dry floors without chemicals (except for occasional use with specialized restorers)
  3. Pad Requirements:
    • Each machine requires its specific type of pad - they are NOT interchangeable
Pro Warning: Do NOT swap burnishing pads with side-by-side machine pads. They're as different as apples and oranges!
