Screen a Gym Floor for Recoat Without a Drum Sander

The gym floor looks dull and scuffed, but it doesn't need a full sand down to bare wood. It needs a screen and recoat: lightly abrade the top coat so fresh finish bonds to it. These 14 x 20 inch sanding screens turn your Clarke FM40 orbital floor machine into the tool for that job, and the small orbit keeps the scratch pattern even instead of leaving circular swirls. They also fit the BOOST deck of the Clarke CA60 20B.

Each case holds 10 screens of one grit. Pick the grit for the job:

Grit Part Number Typical Use
60 997100 The most aggressive cut, for heavy wear and stubborn coatings
80 997101 Removing worn coatings and rough spots before refinishing
100 997102 General screening between coats
120 997103 The lightest abrade, for a final scuff before the new coat

The lower the grit number, the coarser the screen and the more it removes. If you're not sure, start finer and step down only if the floor needs more.

How to Use a Sanding Screen on the FM40

The FM40 manual is specific about this: set the screen on the floor first, roll the machine over it, then lower the machine until the pad comes to rest on the screen, centered. The pad on the driver grips the screen and carries it. Vacuum the dust when you're done, or fit the FM40 vacuum skirt kit to pull it away as you work.

Why Screen With the FM40

  • Orbital action, even scratch pattern. The FM40's 3,540 RPM orbit keeps the scratch pattern even across the floor.

  • Four grits. From a 60 grit cut to a 120 grit scuff, so one machine covers the whole job.

  • Rectangular coverage. The square edge reaches into corners and along walls a round machine misses.

  • Genuine Clarke part. Nilfisk's 14 x 20 sand screens, sold by the case of 10.

Screens wear out as the grit dulls, so keep a spare case on hand for big floors. Not sure which grit or machine you need? Call (855) 601-5678 or email support@oneupcleaning.com with your floor type and finish, and we'll help you pick.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which grit should I use for a screen and recoat?

The finer grits, 100 or 120, are the usual choice for a light abrade before a new coat. Step down to 80 or 60 only when the floor has heavier wear or a stubborn coating to cut through.

How do I use a sanding screen on the FM40?

Set the screen on the floor, roll the machine over it and lower it until the pad rests on the screen, centered. The pad carries the screen.

How many screens are in a case?

Ten screens of one grit.

Do these fit a round floor buffer?

No. They're 14 x 20 inch rectangles for orbital decks like the Clarke FM40 and CA60 20B.
