A New Brush for Your EX40 18LX

The floating brush is what lets the Clarke EX40 18LX scrub carpet fibers between the spray and the vacuum shoe. When the bristles wear short, the brush stops reaching into the pile, and the carpet comes up less clean. These are the three complete 18-inch brush assemblies Clarke lists for the 18LX.

Running the smaller EX40 16ST? It takes 16-inch brushes, which are on the EX40 16ST brush page.

Which Brush Do You Need?

  • Standard nylon (56265099). The brush the machine runs for everyday carpet extraction.

  • Blue hard (56265177). A stiffer bristle. Clarke's manual notes that hard floor work can call for a different brush, and retailers sell this one as the hard floor brush.

  • 240 grit (56265178). Abrasive bristles for scrubbing hard floors. Keep it off carpet.

Why Use the Genuine Clarke Brush

  • Complete assembly. The full brush Clarke lists on the EX40 options page, ready to snap in.

  • Sized for the 18LX. The 18-inch assembly fits the EX40 18LX base. The 16ST takes its own 16-inch brushes.

  • No tools. The brush slides onto the drive lug and snaps into the retainer clip.

Changing the Brush

Turn the power switch off and unplug the machine. Empty both tanks, open the recovery tank lid and lift the recovery tank off. Set the handle upright and tip the machine onto its back. Turn the brush until the fins on the drive lug sit parallel to the floor, grab the brush at the retainer clip end and pull it straight out. Fit the new brush at the drive lug end first, then push the other end in until it snaps into the retainer clip. Clarke's schedule calls for checking and cleaning the brush daily. Brushes are wear items and aren't covered by Nilfisk's machine warranty except for manufacturing defects.

The brush is turned by a belt from the brush motor. If the motor runs but the brush won't turn, check the EX40 drive belt.
