A flight of carpeted stairs, a row of lobby chairs, the grout behind a toilet. None of it fits under a floor machine, so it usually ends with someone on their knees with a hand brush. The Rugged Industries VersaTool takes over that work. It's a 6 lb, 20V cordless scrubber with two orbiting heads that move in sync, so the tool stays balanced in your hands instead of pulling to one side.
Snap a brush or pad onto each hook-and-loop backing plate, pick one of five speeds (600 to 3,400 oscillations per minute), and let the tool's weight do the scrubbing. There's no cord to drag up a stairwell and no outlet to hunt for. A battery runs about 30 to 90 minutes, depending on the surface and the speed you choose.
Carpeted stairs and edges. Agitate pre-spray on every tread, riser and edge where a CRB (counter-rotating brush) machine can't reach, then extract or towel off.
Upholstery. Soft brushes or microfiber pads work cleaner into office chairs, lobby seating, church pews with cushions, sofas and car seats before extraction or low-moisture cleaning.
Tile, grout and restrooms. Stiff brushes scrub grout lines, shower walls and the floor around fixtures. Scrub pads take scuff marks off VCT and lift grime from stainless steel.
Commercial kitchens. Rugged makes a griddle sanding screen for carbon on flat top griddles, plus scrub pads for greasy equipment and floors.
Vehicles, boats and RVs. Floor mats, seats, steps and trim, plus polishing with foam pads on paint, metal and gel coat.
What sold me on the VersaTool is the price for what it does. Twin-head orbital detail tools have been around for years, but the ones we've carried were corded and cost three times as much. This one runs on a 20V battery, weighs 6 pounds and starts at $278.99 with a battery and charger.
The two heads orbit in sync and balance each other, so you guide the tool with two light hands instead of fighting it. The triggerless control helps on long jobs too: hold the start button for 3 seconds and it locks on, so your thumb isn't clamped down for a whole staircase.
Who it suits: carpet and upholstery cleaners, janitorial crews that handle stairs and restrooms, and detailers. The honest limits: it's a detail tool, not a floor machine, and battery life runs 30 to 90 minutes. If you work it hard for a whole job, get the Deluxe Kit with the second battery.
The VersaTool is new, so there isn't much public feedback yet. What we found comes from verified buyers on the TMF Store, the shop run by Truck Mount Forums for carpet cleaning pros, where it holds 5 stars across 4 reviews. One owner uses it on worn carpeted stairs. Another used it with the brush set to agitate a recliner during low-moisture upholstery cleaning and planned to move on to a sectional. A third said the performance surprised him after a few uses. Thin, but consistent: it saves the hand scrubbing on stairs and furniture.
Cordless 20V lithium power. Work a whole stairwell, a parking lot of cars or a boat dock without an extension cord.
Two synchronized orbital heads. They counterbalance each other, so the tool tracks straight and covers a 9-inch path per pass.
500 W brushless motor and steel gears. Steady torque under load, and no carbon brushes to wear out and replace.
Five speeds, 600 to 3,400 OPM. Low for delicate fabric and finishing, high for grout and heavy scrubbing.
Triggerless lock-on. Hold the start button 3 seconds and let go; one press stops it.
Hook-and-loop accessories. Swap between brushes, microfiber and pads in seconds.
Both kits include the VersaTool and a charger. The Starter Kit ($278.99) comes with one 20V battery; the Deluxe Kit ($328.99) comes with two, for $50 more.
Rugged rates a battery at 30 to 90 minutes. Gentle upholstery work at low speed sits at the long end; stiff brushes on grout at top speed sit at the short end. If you clean in short sessions, one battery is enough. If the tool runs most of a job, or a crew shares it, take the Deluxe Kit and keep one battery on the charger while you use the other.
Rugged lists both kits as the tool, battery and charger, so plan on adding the brushes or pads for your work. Everything attaches with hook-and-loop, one piece per head.

Rugged sells the brushes as a 6-pack (two of each grade) and the pads in packs. Want them with your tool? Call (855) 601-5678 or message us, and we'll add the right set to your order.
Take the battery out, then center a brush or pad on each backing plate and press it on firmly. An off-center pad shakes the tool. Slide the battery into the handle until it clicks.
Hold the top button for 3 seconds to wake the tool, then tap it to choose speed 1 to 5 (set the speed while the motor is stopped). Rest both heads on the surface first, then press and hold the lower button to start. Keep holding for 3 seconds and it locks on. One press of the lower button stops it. Never start it in the air: Rugged warns that pads can fly off, and the overlapping heads are a pinch point for fingers and loose clothing.
On carpet and upholstery, pre-spray first, let it dwell, then work the area in overlapping passes and finish with extraction or a clean towel. Test a hidden spot before you start on paint, gel coat or delicate fabric.
If you've looked at twin-head stair and upholstery tools before, you've probably seen the Orbot Micro. We sell both, so here's the straight comparison.

The VersaTool costs about $640 less, cuts the cord and adds speed control. The Micro still has its strengths: a cast aluminum body, the Carpet and Rug Institute Seal of Approval (per Orbot), and no batteries to manage on an all-day job. If you run one tool for eight hours straight next to an outlet, the Micro makes sense. For everything else, the VersaTool is the better value.
It fits you best if you clean stairs, seating, restrooms or vehicles every week and want to stop scrubbing by hand. It doesn't replace a CRB or floor machine on open floors, and it isn't an extractor, so heavily soiled carpet and upholstery still need rinsing and extraction. Look at our encap machines for open carpet.
One more thing to know: it's a dry-handled power tool. Rugged warns against using it in rain or wet conditions, because water in the motor housing can short it. Use damp, low-moisture methods, keep liquid away from the motor vents, and don't flood the surface you're scrubbing.
Not sure it fits your jobs? Tell us what you clean and how often, or call (855) 601-5678, and we'll tell you honestly whether it's the right tool, including when it isn't.
Upkeep takes a minute. Blow compressed air through the motor vents weekly to clear dust, wipe the housing with a damp cloth and mild soap (never submerge it), and check the backing plates. When the hooks flatten and pads start slipping off, replace the plates; Rugged sells them as a set. Charge and store the batteries between 40°F and 105°F (4°C to 40°C).
Rugged Industries warrants the VersaTool for 1 year from the date of purchase against defects in materials and workmanship, covering the tool body, motor and electronic controls. Brushes, pads and backing plates are consumables and aren't covered, batteries may carry a separate limited warranty, and damage from moisture, misuse or unauthorized repairs is excluded. Contact us first if anything goes wrong; we work the claim with Rugged. Here's our return policy.
Rugged's own start guide walks you through the two buttons: waking the tool, picking a speed, starting the motor and using the lock-on.
It's short, and worth watching once before your first job, because the start sequence is different from a trigger tool.
Two details catch new users: the speed only changes while the motor is stopped, and the motor only starts when you press the lower button with the heads resting on the surface. The full steps are in the user manual under Document Downloads.
