It's 5 a.m. at a quick-serve restaurant. The dining room is done, but the kitchen line, the restroom stalls and the strip of tile under the front counter still get a mop and bucket, because nothing with wheels fits back there. The Tornado BD 17/6 compact floor scrubber is made for exactly that floor. It's a 17-inch battery auto scrubber that scrubs, lays down solution and dries in one pass, and its squeegee swings 180 degrees to either side, so it keeps picking up water through turns and even when you back the machine out from under a counter.

That last part is what a regular walk-behind can't do. Its squeegee trails behind the brush, so whatever you scrub while reversing stays wet. On the BD 17/6 the squeegee sits just 1 inch behind the brush and swings around to follow it, so the floor under the sink gets dried instead of left for a wet mop.

It arrives ready to work. Two sealed 12-volt AGM batteries (24 V total), an onboard charger and a standard scrub brush come with it, so you plug the charging cord into a wall outlet at night and there's no battery watering to schedule. Tornado rates it at 16,200 sq ft per hour with 6-gallon solution and recovery tanks, under 70 dB. Which One Do I Need: BD 14/4, BD 17/6 or BD 20/11L?

The BD 17/6 sits in the middle of Tornado's small disk scrubbers. Here's the honest split.

• Pick the BD 17/6 for restrooms, commercial kitchens, convenience stores, quick-serve restaurants and retail back rooms: small to mid-size floors full of edges, stall partitions and counters, where you'd otherwise mop. It covers more floor per pass and per tank than the BD 14/4, and batteries and charger are included in the price.

• Pick the Tornado BD 14/4 if the space is even tighter or the floor is small. It has a parabolic squeegee that also picks up through 180-degree turns and included AGM batteries in a narrower 14-inch machine, for $499 less. The trade-off is refills: its 3.5-gallon solution tank holds a little over half of what the BD 17/6 carries.

• Step up to the Tornado BD 20/11L when the floor is open: corridors, classrooms, retail aisles. Its 20-inch path, 11-gallon solution tank and 3 to 4 hours of runtime cover far more floor per shift. It uses a conventional rear squeegee instead of the swivel design, weighs about 320 lb with batteries, and batteries are an option, which puts it at $5,299 with AGM batteries.

The Owner's Insights on the BD 17/6

I'll start with the number that matters most on this machine: runtime. Tornado lists about 1.15 hours per charge and 8 to 10 hours to recharge. That's plenty for a restroom block, a kitchen and a back hallway every night. It is not a machine for a 20,000 square foot showroom on one charge, and if that's your floor, the BD 20/11L is the better buy. It's also a flat-floor scrubber: Tornado rates it for slopes up to 2%, and it has no parking brake.

Where the BD 17/6 earns its keep is the floor a bigger scrubber can't reach. To dry going backward, you swing the squeegee to the front, press down on the handle to lift the nose slightly, and back out while it picks up. When the shift is over, empty both tanks, fold the handle and tip it back onto its rear wheels. It stands upright in a janitor closet, and you can check the brush and squeegee without lifting 191 pounds. Tornado's manual says to park it that way whenever it'll sit more than two or three days, so the brush bristles don't flatten under the machine's weight.

Why You'll Love the BD 17/6

• 180-degree swivel squeegee, 1 inch behind the brush. It dries going forward, through turns and in reverse, so floors under counters and inside stalls don't need a follow-up mop.

• Batteries and charger in the box. Two sealed AGM batteries come installed with an onboard charger, so there's no watering, and no separate charger to lose.

• 17-inch path with 6-gallon tanks. You get noticeably more coverage per pass and per fill than a 14-inch compact, in a machine still narrow enough for aisles and stalls.

• Solution stops when you do. A solenoid valve releases solution only while you squeeze the handle levers, so pausing to move a chair doesn't leave a puddle.

• Adjustable, folding handle. It sets to the operator's height, tilts more upright near walls without stopping, and folds down for storage.

• Rated under 70 dB. That's quiet enough to scrub a store or clinic hallway while people are around.

Setup, Chemicals, Daily Care and Brushes

Fill the solution tank with clean water no hotter than 122°F and add a low-foam scrubber detergent at the label rate. Tornado says never to use acid, and to add a small dose of defoamer to the recovery tank before you start. Lower the squeegee, switch on the brush, vacuum and solution buttons, then squeeze the handle levers and walk it forward.

After each shift, drain the recovery tank with its hose, rinse the tank and the suction filter, and wipe the squeegee blades. Clean the solution filter weekly. Recharge right away: Tornado warns that leaving AGM batteries fully drained damages them, and says to unplug the battery connector if the machine will sit for more than two weeks. The brush in the box (part 48903120, 0.6 mm bristle) handles everyday scrubbing. For smooth floors, Tornado offers a 17-inch pad holder (48803050). For heavily soiled, hard-wearing floors there's a stiffer 0.9 mm polypropylene brush (48903130) or an abrasive Tynex brush (48903140), and the 5-mix brush (48903150) is Tornado's pick for all floor types. Replacement squeegee blades are 48413010 (front) and 48413020 (rear), with clear oil-resistant versions (48413030 and 48413040) for kitchens and greasy floors.
