Tornado® BD 30/20 Walk-Behind Disk Scrubber, 30 Inch, 20 Gallon, Traction Drive

It's 10 p.m. in a 40,000 square foot retail store. Your night crew has a 20-inch scrubber and a list that also includes restrooms, trash and the stockroom. At a real-world 9,000 square feet an hour, the floor alone eats more than four hours, and the doors open at 8. The Tornado BD 30/20 walk-behind floor scrubber cuts a 30-inch cleaning path with two 15-inch disks, so every pass covers half again as much floor as a 20-inch machine.

Tornado rates it at 33,798 square feet per hour. Take off 30% to 50% for turns, refills and emptying, and you're still at roughly 17,000 to 23,000 square feet an hour, which puts that 40,000 square foot store at about two hours. A 20-gallon solution tank and 22-gallon recovery tank keep refills down, a 570W vacuum motor leaves the floor dry behind the 39-inch squeegee, and a 300W traction drive moves the machine for your operator, so nobody is shoving a 350-pound scrubber, plus its batteries, across the floor.

Which One Do I Need: Machine Only, Lead Acid or AGM?

The machine is the same in all three options. What changes is whether batteries come in the crate, and which kind. Every version includes the onboard charger.

• Machine Only, No Batteries (TS530-W30-U). Pick this if you already have a battery supplier or batteries to reuse. You'll need four batteries for the 24-volt system that fit a 15 x 20 x 11 inch compartment, and the machine has to be set to the battery type (lead acid, AGM or gel) before use. Batteries you source yourself aren't covered by Tornado's battery warranty.

• With 4 Lead Acid Batteries (TS530-W30-UC). The lowest cost to get running. Flooded lead acid batteries need distilled water topped up (Tornado's manual says check them every 20 charges) and should be charged somewhere ventilated. A good fit when someone on your team already looks after batteries.

• With 4 AGM Sealed Batteries (TS530-W30-UG). Sealed and maintenance-free, so there's no watering and no acid to spill. It costs more up front and it's the one we'd pick for schools, healthcare and multi-site crews where nobody owns battery care.

BD 30/20 or the BD 26/20?

The Tornado BD 26/20 is the same machine with a 26-inch deck: same tanks, same motors, same traction drive. The BD 30/20 gains 4 inches of path and about 15% more rated coverage for a little more money. If your floor has tight aisles, narrow corridors or a lot of fixtures to work around, the BD 26/20 is easier to steer and it's the one we'd point you to. If it's mostly open floor, the extra width pays you back every night. For smaller floors, the Tornado BD 20/11L is a 20-inch machine at well under half the price.

The Owner's Insights on the BD 30/20

This is Tornado's widest walk-behind disk scrubber, and I'd only sell it to you for open floor: warehouses, big-box retail, gyms, school cafeterias, long hospital corridors. Past that size you're usually looking at a ride-on like the Tornado BR 28/27.

One thing to check before you order: the squeegee is 39 inches wide, which is wider than a standard 36-inch door. The squeegee comes off with two knobs and no tools, so it's a thirty-second job, but plan your route through double doors where you can. Also, the traction drive will climb a 10% ramp, yet Tornado's manual says not to scrub on slopes steeper than 2%. Drive it up the loading ramp, scrub the flat floor.

What I like is how little you have to teach. Push the drive levers forward and it moves, the brushes spin and the solution flows. Let go and all three stop, with an electronic brake bringing the machine to a halt. Brush pressure is one knob, and there's a silent mode for the vacuum when people are still in the building.

Why You'll Love the BD 30/20

• 30-inch path with two 15-inch disks at 160 RPM. Fewer passes per aisle, so your crew finishes the open floor in about two thirds the time of a 20-inch machine.

• 300W traction drive, up to 2.5 mph. The machine pulls its own weight, so a long shift doesn't wear out your operator's shoulders.

• Up to 110 lb of adjustable down pressure. Turn it up for greasy back-of-house tile, turn it down for sealed concrete or VCT that only needs a maintenance scrub.

• 570W vacuum with 64 in of waterlift. Strong suction behind the 39-inch squeegee leaves floors dry enough to walk on, so wet-floor signs come down sooner.

• 20-gallon solution and 22-gallon recovery tanks. Fewer trips to the mop sink, and the level tube on the side shows your solution at a glance.

• Onboard charger and under 70 dB(A). Plug it into any 120 V outlet overnight. At under 70 dB(A), only a little louder than normal conversation at around 60 dB, it can run while the building is open.

Setup, Batteries, Pads and Daily Care

Sweep or dust mop first. Tornado's manual asks for a pre-sweep, and the squeegee can't pick up debris. Fill the solution tank through the cap at the rear right with clean water no hotter than 104°F, add a low-foaming scrubber chemical at the lowest dilution that does the job, and put a splash of defoamer in the recovery tank if foam shows up.

To charge, park on a level floor near a 120 V outlet (the charger cord is about 6.5 feet), lift the recovery tank to its first stop as the manual shows, and plug in. A full charge takes 8 to 10 hours. Tornado lists 3 to 5 hours of runtime, while the spec sheet says 3 to 4, so plan your routes on the lower number. Tornado sells 15-inch pads for this machine: white polish (WT0515), red spray buff (RD0515), blue cleaning (BL0515), green scrubbing (GR0515), black stripping (BK0515), heavy-duty black (BH0515) and Dominator (DM0515). Optional 16-inch brushes come in soft (48914010), medium (48914020), Tynex grit (48914070) and 5-mix (48914080). The replacement pad driver is 48814020, the front and rear squeegee blades are 48408020 and 48408010, and an oil-resistant rear blade (48406110) is available for oily floors.

Daily: empty and rinse the recovery tank, rinse the vacuum filter, wipe the squeegee blades and rinse your pads or brushes. Weekly: flip the rear squeegee blade to a fresh edge when it wears, flush the squeegee hose and clean the solution filter.
