Tornado Cascade 20: The Self-Propelled Recycling Carpet Extractor for Big Carpet

Which One Do I Need? Cascade 20, Pro 500 or Marathon 2000

All three are Tornado carpet extractors, but they solve different problems. Here's how they compare.

• Choose the Cascade 20 if you clean big open carpet (offices, schools, hotel corridors, churches) and refills or dry times are what slow you down. It covers the most floor per hour of the three.

• Choose the Tornado Pro 500 if your jobs are rooms, stairs and upholstery rather than long runs. It's the same CFR recycling idea in a smaller machine that you clean with a wand, and it costs a lot less.

• Choose the Marathon 2000 if you want a self-propelled machine but would rather keep using ordinary extraction chemicals. It doesn't recycle, so plan on more dumping and refilling.

The Owner's Insights on the Cascade 20

The Cascade 20 is a production machine, and I'd only recommend it if you have a lot of carpet. On a 2,000 square foot office it's more machine than you need. On a school or a floor of cubicles it earns its keep, because the operator sets the speed dial and walks behind it instead of pushing a wand for hours.

Two things matter before you buy. First, it recycles its solution through filters, so it only works properly with chemicals made for CFR machines. Tornado's manual says so plainly, and a high-foam shampoo will fill the tank with suds and can flood the vacuum motor. Budget for CFR in-tank cleaner and Defoam from day one. Second, it needs about 15 gallons in the tank to run properly, and the filters get rinsed after every job.

It's also heavy. The manual lists 202 pounds, and Tornado recommends taking the cleaning head off to move it between sites. Think of it as a machine that lives in the building or rides in a van with a ramp.

Why You'll Love the Cascade 20

• Self-propelled forward drive, 0 to 114 ft per minute. The operator steers and the machine does the pulling, so one person can clean a large floor without wearing out.

• CFR continuous flow recycling. The 25-gallon tank filters and reuses solution as you clean, so you stop far less often to dump and refill.

• Patented atomizing vacuum shoe. Solution is sprayed and pulled back out in the same pass, so less water soaks the backing and the carpet dries faster.

• Two cleaning modes from one dial. Maintenance mode at 200 psi and speed 7 for routine cleaning, restorative mode at 400 psi and speed 4 for heavy traffic lanes.

• 75 ft detachable power cord. A long 12-gauge cord means fewer stops to move to the next outlet in long hallways.

• Clear tank lid. You can watch the recycling tank for foam while you clean and catch problems before they reach the motor.

How Many Square Feet Can the Cascade 20 Clean per Hour?

CFR, the company behind the Cascade recycling technology, rates it at 4,200 square feet an hour in restorative (deep cleaning) mode. Maintenance mode runs faster because the speed dial goes up. Real jobs include turns, outlet changes and filter checks, so plan on less than the rated figure. Tell us the size of your floors and we'll help you estimate a realistic shift.

How to Set Up and Care for Your Cascade 20

The Cascade ships with the cleaning head detached. Fit the side plates, slide the head under its bracket, pin the two clevises and connect the solution hose, all described in the first pages of the manual. Fill the tank with water no hotter than 140°F, up to the 25-gallon mark (at least about 15 gallons), then add a CFR in-tank cleaner and Defoam. Prime the pump with the speed dial at zero, the vacuum and pump on and the trigger held for 30 seconds, then set your pressure and drive forward, overlapping each pass by 2 inches. At the end of the day, drain the tank through the rear hose, rinse the inlet filter, main filter and ball filters, rinse the spray bar and in-line strainer, and leave the lid off so everything dries. If you need an extension cord, keep it under 70 feet and 10 gauge or heavier. Tornado's manual calls for a vacuum motor brush check at 700 hours or once a year and a pump and regulator check at 500 hours. What the Tornado Warranty Covers

Under the Tornado Commercial Limited Warranty (January 2025), the Cascade 20 (#98856) is covered for 4 years on parts, 10 years on the rotomolded body and 2 years on labor. That's better than the terms printed in the older manual and spec sheet, and the current warranty is the one that applies. Repairs are evaluated and done by an authorized Tornado service center, and Tornado prepays ground freight both ways on eligible claims. Wear items such as hoses and filters aren't covered, and neither is damage from chemicals or maintenance the manual doesn't allow. The full terms are in the downloads below.
