Which One Do I Need? The Four Pro 500 Versions

Every Pro 500 has the same 13-gallon recycling tank, 500 psi pump, dual vacuum motors and warranty. What changes is heat and whether the tools come in the box.

• Machine only (98820 or 98830) if you already own a Pro-series wand, hand tool and 33 ft hose, for example as a second machine for a crew that already runs one. It ships with no hose, wand or hand tool, so on its own it can't clean anything.

• Kitted (98822 or 98832) if this is your first Pro 500. You get the 11-inch Rapid Recovery floor wand, the 3-inch combination hand tool for stairs and upholstery, and the 33 ft hose, ready to work out of the box.

• Perfect Heat (98830 or 98832) if you clean greasy traffic lanes, restaurant carpet or restoration jobs where hot solution makes the difference. It runs on two power cords, so plan on two outlets, and put them on separate circuits so the heater doesn't trip a breaker. At up to 200°F it's too hot for some delicate fabrics, so test first.

• No heat (98820 or 98822) if most of your work is routine maintenance cleaning on office or hotel carpet. It runs on one 20 amp circuit and costs less.

Pro 500 or Surge 500?

The Tornado Surge 500 is the conventional alternative: a heated 15-gallon box extractor with the same 500 psi top pressure, a wand and hose in the box, and a lower price than either Perfect Heat Pro 500. It fills, cleans and dumps like any standard extractor. Choose the Surge 500 if your jobs are a room or two at a time and a sink is always close. Choose the Pro 500 if refills and dry times are what slow your crew down, because recycling the solution is the one thing the Surge can't do.

The Owner's Insights on the Pro 500

The Pro 500 is a different kind of machine from the box extractors most crews grew up on, and I want you to know that before you buy one. It recycles its solution through filters, so it only works properly with chemicals made for CFR machines. Tornado's manual says so plainly, and an ordinary high-foam carpet shampoo will fill the tank with suds and can flood the vacuum motors. Budget for CFR chemicals and a jug of defoamer from day one.

The daily routine matters more here too. There are three filters (inlet, main and pump protection), and the main filter has to be rinsed at the end of every job, or the pump starts cycling on and off. The pump also needs at least 5 gallons in the tank to run. None of that is hard, but it's a machine for a crew that takes care of its equipment. If that's your crew, you get a 13-gallon tank that behaves like a much bigger one and carpet that dries faster than it would with a standard extractor.

One practical note: it weighs 124 pounds empty (128 with Perfect Heat), so loading it into a van is a two-person job even with the wheeled handle.

Why You'll Love the Pro 500

• CFR continuous flow recycling. Solution is filtered and reused as you clean, so you stop far less often to dump and refill.

• Moisture-controlled cleaning for faster dry times. Tornado says the CFR tools recover up to 50% more moisture than traditional extraction tools, which means less chance of mildew and a room back in use sooner.

• Adjustable 100 to 500 psi pump with a front gauge. Turn it down for upholstery and fabric office partitions, up for ground-in traffic lanes and grouted tile.

• Dual two-stage vacuum motors, 150 inches of waterlift. Strong enough to pull solution back out of commercial carpet in one pass.

• Hinged tank and easy filter access. The tank tilts up to reach the internal parts, and all three filters are easy to reach for daily rinsing.

• Built to move between jobs. 12-inch rear wheels, a wheeled handle for loading, a front drain hose and a tray that carries the wand.

How the Perfect Heat Versions Work

Perfect Heat models combine Tornado's Perfect Heat coils with a 1,710-watt in-line electric heater, and the solution can reach up to 200°F. You switch the heater on from the control panel and give it 5 to 10 minutes to warm up before you start. A valve inside the upper compartment sends the solution through the heater or around it, so the same machine can clean with cold water when a fabric can't take heat. Set that valve before you fill the tank.

How to Set Up and Care for Your Pro 500

Fill the tank with water no hotter than 130°F and add a CFR in-tank cleaner, then prime the pump by running fluid through the priming hose for 15 to 30 seconds. Connect the hose to the quick disconnect on the front, attach your wand or hand tool, close the lid and switch on the vacuum and pump. Pre-spraying heavy soil helps. The CFR floor wand works in the forward direction only, and overlapping each stroke by at least 3 inches prevents streaks. Our guide on how to use a carpet extractor, step by step covers the basics.

At the end of the day, drain and rinse the tank, rinse the main filter sleeve, empty the inlet filter, clean the in-line strainer on the wand and leave the lid off so everything dries. If foam builds up, pour one to two ounces of defoamer into the tank or the vacuum hose. If you need an extension cord, keep it under 70 feet and 10 AWG or heavier. Tornado's service intervals are in the manual: spray nozzles wear out after 200 to 250 hours, pump valves and the pressure regulator need attention at 400 hours, and the vacuum motor brushes get checked at 700. What the Tornado Warranty Covers

Under the Tornado Commercial Limited Warranty (January 2025), all four Pro 500 versions are covered for 4 years on parts, 10 years on the rotomolded body and 2 years on labor. That's better than the terms printed in the 2019 manual, and the current warranty is the one that applies. Repairs are evaluated and done by an authorized Tornado service center, and Tornado prepays ground freight both ways on eligible claims. Wear items such as hoses and filters aren't covered, and neither is damage from chemicals or maintenance the manual doesn't allow. The full terms are in the downloads below.
