Tornado® Surge 500 15-Gallon 500 PSI Heated Carpet Extractor with Wand

It's Monday, and your schedule has a restaurant entrance with a gray traffic lane at 7 a.m. and a hotel suite with a coffee-stained headboard at 2 p.m. A cold-water machine smears the first one. A machine stuck at high pressure soaks the second. The Tornado Surge 500 is a heated commercial carpet extractor with a pump you set with one knob, anywhere from 50 to 500 psi, and a 1,750-watt in-line heater that brings your solution up to 190°F.

The 15-gallon solution and recovery tanks hold half again as much as a 10-gallon box extractor, so a large room gets done with fewer trips to the sink. A 133 CFM Airwatt vacuum motor with 125 inches of waterlift pulls the dirty water back out, and it all rolls on 12-inch rear wheels with a stair-assist frame. The 20-foot Insider hose and a two-piece wand come in the box.

Which One Do I Need: Surge 10, Surge 220 or Surge 500?

The three Surge models share the same idea: a box extractor you roll to the job, with the wand and hose stored on board. What changes is size, heat and pressure.

• Surge 500 (this page) if one machine has to cover everything: greasy entry mats and oily traffic lanes at full pressure, then upholstery, drapes and delicate fibers at 50 to 100 psi. Carpet cleaning companies with mixed accounts, hotels and property managers get the most out of the adjustable pump.

• Surge 220 if your work is routine maintenance cleaning on commercial carpet. It's the same 15-gallon body, the same 133 CFM vacuum and the same 1,750-watt heater, with a fixed 220 psi pump instead of the adjustable one, and it costs less. If you never need to turn the pressure down for upholstery or up for heavy soil, that's the smarter buy.

• Surge 10 if you clean offices, apartments or hotel rooms and need something lighter. It has an 8-gallon solution tank and a 10-gallon recovery tank, a 100 psi pump and no heater, weighs 93 lb instead of 152 and runs on a single outlet.

Cleaning big rooms far from a sink? The Tornado Pro 500 recycling extractor filters and reuses its solution, so its 13-gallon tank goes much further between refills. It needs CFR chemicals and costs more with heat, but it's the better fit when dumping and refilling is what slows your crew down.

In fairness to the competition: the Powr-Flite Pulsar Delta+, from the same parent company, has two vacuum motors and 215 inches of waterlift, so it pulls more water out of thick carpet. In exchange it needs two 20 amp circuits, ships without a wand and carries a shorter warranty. If recovery is the only thing you care about, look at it.

The Owner's Insights on the Surge 500

The question I get most about the Surge 500 is whether it's worth the step up from the Surge 220. Same body, same vacuum, same heater. What you pay for is the pump. If your crew cleans office carpet on a schedule, the 220 does that job and I'd rather you keep the difference. The 500 earns its price when one machine has to handle a greasy restaurant entry in the morning and a hotel headboard in the afternoon, with a turn of the pressure knob between them.

Two things to know before you order. Tornado's manual has each of the two power cords going to its own grounded 15 amp circuit, so in an older building plan on finding a second circuit near the job, not just a second outlet on the same wall. And at 152 pounds empty, it's a two-person lift into a van. The stair-assist frame and handle wheels make stairs manageable, but they don't make it light.

Why You'll Love the Surge 500

• Adjustable 50 to 500 psi pump. Turn it down for upholstery and delicate fibers, turn it up for ground-in traffic lanes, all from one knob on top of the machine.

• 1,750-watt in-line heater, up to 190°F. Hot solution loosens oily soil that cold water leaves behind, and the heater is ready 3 to 5 minutes after you prime the pump.

• 15-gallon solution and recovery tanks. Fewer stops to refill and dump on a large room, and a 10-foot sink fill hose makes each refill quicker.

• Airwatt vacuum motor with sealed bearings. Tornado built this motor for wet pickup, and an electronic float shuts the vacuum off before the recovery tank overfills.

• Stair-assist frame, 12-inch rear wheels and handle-mounted transport wheels. Moving it up a few steps or up a ramp into your van takes less out of your back.

• Onboard storage and a rear service panel. The hose, wand, cords and chemicals ride on the machine, and the clamshell body opens for quick access to the pump, vacuum and heater.

How to Set Up and Care for Your Surge 500

Fill the solution tank with tap water no hotter than 135°F (57°C) plus a low-foam carpet chemical, or skip the chemical if you pre-spray. Lock both power cords into the sockets on the back, plug each into its own grounded 15 amp circuit, and the green light comes on. Prime the pump with the short gray priming hose, switch on the heater and give it 3 to 5 minutes. Then connect the hose and wand, turn on the pump and vacuum, and set the pressure for the job. Your end-of-day routine: drain the recovery tank through the front drain hose, never leave solution sitting overnight, clean the strainer in the solution tank, flush the solution line with clean water (a little white vinegar helps with hard water), and run the vacuum for 3 minutes with the lid open. Leave the lids open in storage and keep the machine out of freezing temperatures. Tornado says not to use citrus-based (d-limonene) cleaners or chemicals with abrasive additives, which void the warranty. If foam gets past the float, add defoamer.

What the Tornado Warranty Covers

Under the Tornado Commercial Limited Warranty (January 2025), the Surge 500 is covered for 4 years on parts, 10 years on the rotomolded housing and 2 years on labor. Repairs are evaluated and done by an authorized Tornado service center, and Tornado prepays ground freight both ways on eligible claims.
