It's Thursday night, and your crew has the second floor: open office carpet with a coffee trail to every desk, a break room, and a lobby runner that catches everything tracked in from the parking lot. Cold water leaves the traffic lanes gray. A small box machine means a trip to the sink every few rooms. The Tornado Surge 220 is a heated carpet extractor built for that kind of scheduled work: a 220 psi pump, a 1,750-watt in-line heater that takes your solution up to 190°F, and 15-gallon solution and recovery tanks.

Fifteen gallons is half again as much as a 10-gallon box extractor, so you refill and dump less often on a big floor. A 133 CFM Airwatt vacuum motor with 125 inches of waterlift pulls the dirty water back out, so the carpet is back in use sooner. It rolls on 12-inch rear wheels with a stair-assist frame, and the 20-foot Insider hose and a two-piece wand come in the box.

Which One Do I Need: Surge 10, Surge 220 or Surge 500?

All three Surge models are box extractors you roll to the job, with the wand and hose riding on board. What changes is size, heat and pressure.

• Surge 220 (this page) if your work is routine maintenance cleaning on commercial carpet: offices, schools, churches and hotel corridors on a schedule. Heat plus 220 psi handles everyday soil, and you don't pay for an adjustable pump you won't touch.

• Surge 500 if one machine has to cover everything. It's the same 15-gallon body, vacuum and heater, but the pump adjusts from 50 to 500 psi: down for upholstery and delicate fibers, up for greasy entry mats and ground-in traffic lanes. Carpet cleaning companies with mixed accounts get their money's worth from that knob.

• Surge 10 if you clean rooms rather than floors: hotel rooms, apartment turnovers and small offices. It has an 8-gallon solution tank and a 10-gallon recovery tank, a 100 psi pump and no heater, weighs 93 lb instead of 152 and runs on one ordinary outlet.

In fairness to our own price tag: the Powr-Flite Pulsar Gamma+, from Tornado's sister brand at Tacony, lists the same 15-gallon tanks, 220 psi pump, single-element heater and 133 CFM Airwatt vacuum, and it costs less. It ships without a wand and carries a shorter warranty. If you already own a good wand and can live with 2 years on parts and 1 on labor, look at it. We sell both, so either way we're happy.

The Owner's Insights on the Surge 220

The Surge 220 is the Surge I'd point most facility crews toward. It shares its 15-gallon body, Airwatt vacuum and heater with the Surge 500; the real difference is the pump. The 220 runs at one fixed pressure, which is what you want when the same carpet gets cleaned every few weeks and nobody should be fiddling with a knob. If your week swings between greasy restaurant entries and hotel upholstery, spend the extra on the 500 instead.

Two things to plan for. Tornado's manual has each of the two power cords going to its own grounded 15 amp circuit, so in an older building you need a second circuit near the job, not just a second outlet on the same wall. And at 152 pounds empty, loading it into a van is a two-person job. The 12-inch rear wheels and the transport wheels on the handle make stairs and ramps easier, but they don't make it light.

How to Set Up and Care for Your Surge 220

Fill the solution tank with tap water at 120 to 135°F (49 to 57°C) plus a low-foam carpet chemical mixed to its label, or use plain water if you pre-spray. Twist-lock the extension cords into the sockets on the back, plug each into its own grounded 15 amp circuit, and the green light comes on. Connect the hose and wand, switch on the heater (the orange light shows it's working), then the pump and the vacuum. Your end-of-day routine: drain the recovery tank through the front drain hose, never leave solution sitting overnight, clean the strainer in the solution tank, flush the solution line with clean water (a little white vinegar helps with hard water), put a drop of lubricant on the brass quick disconnects, and run the vacuum for 3 minutes with the lid open. Don't fill from the bucket you dumped dirty water into. Store it indoors with the lids open and out of freezing temperatures. Tornado says not to use citrus-based (d-limonene) cleaners, and chemicals with abrasive additives void the warranty. If foam gets past the float, add defoamer.

For detail work, Tornado lists the stainless AA176.1 upholstery tool, the AA160.1 crevice tool, the AA162.1 detail tool, the AA144DC double-chamber detail tool and the WW1000-2 two-jet wand as Surge 220 accessories. Replacement parts are the PFX-2PC two-piece wand and the 20 ft Insider hose (1504WDSI, or the high-pressure 1504WDSI-HP). What the Tornado Warranty Covers

Under the Tornado Commercial Limited Warranty (January 2025), the Surge 220 is covered for 4 years on parts, 10 years on the rotomolded housing and 2 years on labor. Repairs are evaluated and done by an authorized Tornado service center. Wear items such as hoses aren't covered, and the manual asks you to register the machine within 30 days of purchase.
