The Surge 10 is a wand machine. You walk the wand across the carpet while the box sits in the hallway, which makes it the right tool for rooms, stairs, corners, upholstery and car interiors. Here's how it sits next to the other 100 psi extractors we carry.

• Pick the Surge 10 for hotel rooms, apartment turnovers, offices with lots of small rooms, stairwells and detail work with hand tools. It has the bigger recovery tank of the box machines below and Tornado's 2-year parts and labor coverage.

• Pick a self-contained extractor like the Tornado Marathon SE 900 when most of your carpet is open area: corridors, conference rooms, lobbies. Its 18-inch brushed head scrubs and extracts as you walk it, which covers wide floors faster than a wand. It's the wrong tool for stairs and furniture.

• Look at the Powr-Flite PFX1080 if you want the same class of machine with dual 2-stage vacuum motors. It's made by Powr-Flite, Tornado's sister brand at Tacony, lists 150 inches of waterlift and weighs 8 pounds less. The trade-off is a smaller 8-gallon recovery tank and a shorter parts warranty.

The Owner's Insights on the Surge 10

I'll start with what this machine isn't. It has no heater, and 100 psi is maintenance pressure, not restoration pressure. If you're pulling years of ground-in soil out of a restaurant entrance, you want a heated Surge 220 or 500, and I'd rather tell you now. Where the Surge 10 earns its keep is the steady work: hotel rooms between guests, apartment turnovers, a coffee spill in the conference room before the 2 o'clock meeting.

Two practical things. Both switches, pump and vacuum, sit on the front where you can reach them without bending around the machine, and the drain hose is on the front too, so you empty it into a floor drain without tipping 93 pounds. And the housing is a clamshell design, which is how a service tech gets to the pump and vacuum motor. Tornado's manual says there are no owner-serviceable parts inside and opening it voids the warranty, so that access is for your service center, not for you.

Setup, Chemicals, Daily Care and Tools

Fill the solution tank with tap water at 120 to 135°F and an extraction chemical mixed to its label, or pre-spray and fill with plain water. Plug the extension cord into the socket on the back and into a grounded 15-amp outlet, connect the hose and wand, then switch on the pump and the vacuum. Don't go hotter than 135°F: Tornado says hotter water can damage the pump seals and diaphragm.

Use low-foaming chemicals made for extraction machines. Tornado's manual rules out citrus (d-limonene) cleaners and says chemicals with abrasive additives void the warranty. If foam shows up at the vacuum exhaust, add defoamer to the recovery tank.

Daily care takes five minutes: empty and rinse both tanks, clean the strainer in the solution tank, flush the solution line with clean water (a white vinegar rinse helps with hard water), put a drop of lubricant on the brass quick-disconnects, and run the vacuum for 3 minutes with the lid open. For detail work, Tornado lists the AA176.1 upholstery tool, the AA160.1 crevice tool, the AA162.1 detail tool, the AA144DC double-chamber detail tool and the WW1000-2 two-jet wand as accessories. If your included wand gets bent, the single-jet drag wand is rated for 100 psi or less. Replacement wand is part PFX-2PC and the replacement 20 ft hose is 1504WDSI.
