Every Marathon is self-contained: solution tank, pump, brush and vacuum live in one body, so you clean by walking the machine over the carpet instead of working a wand. The real difference is how much carpet each one covers between refills, and how much machine you want to push around.

• Pick the Mini-Marathon 370 for single offices, hotel rooms, apartment units, classrooms, church rooms and short hallways where a bigger machine won't turn. At 49 pounds it's half the weight of the next size up.

• Pick the Tornado Marathon SE 900 when the rooms get bigger. It carries a 9-gallon solution tank, cleans an 18-inch path and sprays at 100 psi, and it's still a pull-back machine.

• Pick the Tornado Marathon 1200 for open office floors and corridors. It has a 12-gallon solution tank, a 14-gallon recovery tank and an internal bladder that keeps brush pressure steady as the tank empties.

The Owner's Insights on the Mini-Marathon 370

I'll be straight about where this machine sits. Its pump sprays at 20 psi, and the SE 900 and bigger Marathons spray at 100. That makes the Mini-Marathon a maintenance machine for carpet that gets cleaned on a schedule, not the tool for a restaurant entrance nobody has touched in two years. The 3-gallon recovery tank is the other limit. Tornado says to empty it at about three-quarters full, so on a big room you'll walk to the sink more than you'd like.

What I like is how it's laid out for the person pushing it. The spray button sits on the handle, so you spray with your thumb while you pull back, and the vacuum, brush and solution switches face you on the back of the machine. The recovery tank lifts straight off the solution tank, and the clear lid shows you when it's getting full. For a crew cleaning a string of small rooms every night, that's the right amount of machine.

Why You'll Love the Mini-Marathon 370

• 12-inch chevron brush at 1,000 RPM. It works soil loose in the same pass as the rinse, so you don't pre-scrub with a separate machine.

• Two-stage vacuum, 110 CFM and 92 in of waterlift. More water comes back out of the carpet, so the room dries sooner and goes back into use faster.

• Spray button on the handle. Hold it while you pull, let go about a foot before the end of the pass, and the vacuum picks up what's left.

• Folding handle and 8-inch rear wheels. It folds small enough for a closet or a car trunk and rolls over thresholds and stairs between rooms.

• 8.5 amps on a 30 ft cord. Any grounded 120-volt outlet runs it. Plan on moving the plug more often than you would with a 50-foot cord.

Setup, Chemicals, Daily Care and Accessories

Lift the recovery tank off, measure your extraction chemical into the solution tank at the label ratio, and top it up with hot water no hotter than 150°F (65°C). Never fill the solution tank from the recovery tank, because leftover debris can damage the pump or block the spray jet. Set the recovery tank back, add defoamer if your chemical foams, close the clear lid and connect the vacuum hose to the front of the tank. Test any chemical on a hidden spot first to make sure the carpet is colorfast.

Turn on the vacuum and brush, set the solution switch, then hold the handle button while you pull the machine backward. Tornado recommends no more than two wet passes, and one dry pass without spray helps drying. Overlap each pass slightly so you don't leave stripes.

When you finish, clip the drain hose from the back of the machine onto the solution fitting, drop the other end into the recovery tank and run the pump: whatever is left in the solution tank moves over, so you empty everything in one place. Daily care is short. Clean the solution tank filter, check the spray jet for an even fan (blow it clear, never use a pin), pick lint off the brush and vacuum head, rinse both tanks, and wash the mesh filter in the recovery tank after every dump. Run the vacuum for a few minutes to dry the machine out, store it with the recovery lid off, and keep it above freezing.
