Tornado® Windshear™ 3200 Floor Dryer / Air Mover, 3-Speed, 0.6 hp

It's 6:15 a.m. The lobby was scrubbed an hour ago and it's still shining wet, and the first employees badge in at 7. A mop can't fix that. Moving air can. The Tornado Windshear 3200 is a 3-speed floor dryer and air mover that pushes air across the floor at 3,758 feet per minute (about 43 mph at the grille) from a 0.6 hp motor, so your scrubbed hallway, shampooed carpet or fresh coat of finish is dry long before it would be on its own.

It weighs about 21 pounds and carries by a molded handle. It draws 4.35 amps, so two on one 15-amp circuit still leave room for a vacuum. When the shift is over it stacks four high in the closet. You pick the model: the Standard for back-of-house drying, or the Safety, which adds an extendable handle, rear wheels and a yellow caution sleeve for drying floors while people are still walking through.

Both models are the same dryer: same 0.6 hp motor, same 3,758 FPM, same three speeds and the same kickstand positions. The difference is what happens around it.

• Safety (#98786) for drying while the public walks through: hotel and office lobbies, school hallways between classes, retail aisles during open hours, restaurant dining rooms after a spill. The yellow sleeve on the raised handle tells people why there's a fan running on the floor, and the handle and rear wheels let one person roll it to the next wet spot instead of carrying it there.

• Standard (#98774) for back-of-house floors, after-hours cleaning when the building is empty, or when you're buying several to stack and run together. Same drying power, $44 less per unit.

Two honest notes. The caution sleeve is a warning, not a barrier, so keep your wet floor signs out as well. And if every floor you dry is dried after hours, the Safety model's handle and wheels are $44 you don't need.

I'll be straight with you: this is not a flood restoration fan. If you're drying out a building after a pipe burst, you want the Windshear Downdraft or a row of axial movers, and I'd rather tell you now than after you open the box. The 3200 is the fan a custodial crew keeps next to the scrubber. Scrub the hallway, set the dryer at the far end on low or medium, and the floor is dry before anyone walks on it.

Two things worth knowing before you buy. The polypropylene housing takes a knock off a cart without cracking, but the vents have to stay clear. A blocked intake trips the thermal cutoff, the fan sits for 15 to 30 minutes until the motor cools, and Tornado won't warranty a motor cooked by blocked vents. And the cord is 18.5 feet with no outlet on the unit, so plan on one wall outlet per dryer. Tornado's manual also says no extension cords. If you need to run several off one plug, buy the Storm Deluxe instead.

• 3,758 FPM from a 0.6 hp motor. That's about 43 mph of air across the floor, so a scrubbed corridor dries in minutes instead of sitting wet until the morning shift.

• Three speeds. Low for an occupied office where 69 dB(A) on high would be noticed (normal conversation is around 60 dB), high for your loading dock.

• Three ways to aim it. Flat for floors and carpet, tilted on the kickstand for finish and paint, standing upright for walls, baseboards and drywall.

• Stacks four high. Four dryers take the floor space of one, so they fit in your janitor's closet or the back of your van.

• 4.35 amps. Low enough to share a circuit with your other equipment without hunting for a second outlet.

• Safety model adds handle, wheels and sleeve. Tip it back and roll it to the next spot, with a yellow caution sleeve that does the explaining for you.

Your Windshear 3200 arrives ready to run: unwind the cord fully, plug it into a grounded outlet with GFCI protection, set it on a dry, flat spot out of any puddle, choose the position and turn the switch. The manual shows three positions: horizontal for floors and carpet, tilted on the kickstand for floor finish and paint, and vertical for walls and ceilings. Tornado's site lists four; the upright shot in the gallery is the fourth way we use it, standing on its end to push air along a baseboard.

Your care routine is a damp cloth and a look at the intake and outlet vents after each shift. Dust on the vents makes the motor run hot, and the automatic thermal cutoff will shut it down until it cools. Store it indoors, wrap the cord on the handle, and stack for storage only, never stacked on a truck without a strap.

Wear items are few. The replacement caution sleeve for the Safety model is Tornado part X2501. The parts manual below lists the rest: fan X1373, kickstand assembly X1425, switch and wiring X1419, motor and capacitor assembly X1441 and the power cord X9719.
