The Owner's Insights on the EDIC Comet
The Comet is the machine I suggest when a facility manager says "we have a few carpeted rooms and someone on staff who can run it." Nobody needs training on it: fill the bucket at the sink, drop it in, close the lid, flip the switch and pull the machine backwards. The bladder system is the part people notice first, because there's no lifting a full tank of dirty water over the machine to dump it; the bucket lifts off and goes to the drain. At 40 lb with the handle folded it rides in a car trunk, and the side extension on the brush housing cleans right to the baseboard, so you're not following the machine around with a hand tool.
The honest part: 85 inches of waterlift is fine on commercial glue-down carpet and low loop pile, but on thick residential-style carpet or a room that's been over-wet before, it leaves more water behind than the Fivestar does. Three gallons means refilling every 150 to 250 sq ft on a real cleaning pass, so a 2,000 sq ft office is a morning's work with a lot of trips to the sink. And the 2-year warranty is EDIC's shortest; the Fivestar carries five. If the machine will be someone's main job rather than an occasional chore, spend the extra $168 on the Fivestar.

Vacuum the carpet first; the Comet has no dust filter and must never be used as a dry vacuum. Pre-spray traffic lanes and spots, then mix your extraction detergent to the label, pour it into the smaller opening of the bucket to the fill line, and put 2 oz of defoamer into the recovery bladder. Set the bucket on the machine, close the lid, and plug into a grounded 120 V outlet (12-gauge extension cords only, and no longer than 25 ft). Start at the far end of the room, hold the activate trigger, and pull the machine backwards with 3-inch overlaps, releasing the trigger 6 inches before the end of each stroke. Water hotter than 140°F will damage the pump.
For upholstery and stairs, add the 357AC upholstery tool kit ($307 with the 8 ft hose, $379 with 15 ft). Pull the vacuum hose cuff off the lid and the solution line off the back, click the kit's hoses on instead, and flip the switch to the upholstery position. For carpet the machine can't drive into, the 330AC-CM kit ($324) adds a 15 ft hose and EDIC's 10-inch stainless wand. If you already own EDIC 1.5-inch tools, the 341AC hose assembly on its own starts at $93. No tools ship with the machine.
After each use, pour a gallon of clean hot water into the bucket and run the pump for a minute to flush detergent out of the lines, rinse the lid filter screen and the bucket, and pull lint and string off the brush and vacuum shoe. A shot of silicone spray on the quick-connect coupler keeps it from sticking. Store it indoors where it can't freeze.

What's the difference between the EDIC Comet and the Fivestar?
They share the same 40 lb chassis, 3 gallon lift-off bucket with bladder, 12 inch chevron brush head, fold-down handle and 7 inch wheels. The Comet has a smaller vacuum motor (100 CFM and 85 inches of waterlift against the Fivestar's 112 CFM and 107 inches), a lower pump rating, a 10 amp draw instead of 12, and a 2 year parts and labor warranty instead of 5. Is the Comet's pump 50 psi or 85 psi?
EDIC's website lists the 419TR at 50 psi and its 2026 distributor price list says 85 psi; the parts list in the manual shows a 45 psi Flojet pump. We list 50 psi, the figure EDIC publishes on its own product page. In practice a 3 gallon self-contained machine with brush agitation doesn't rely on pump pressure the way a portable extractor with a wand does, but if the exact figure matters to you, ask us and we'll confirm with EDIC before you order.
Can the Comet clean upholstery, stairs and car seats?
Yes, with the optional 357AC upholstery tool kit, which is not included with the machine. The kit's 8 ft or 15 ft hoses connect to the lid and the back of the machine in place of the built-in hoses, and the switch has an upholstery position that runs the pump and vacuum without the brush. For carpet in closets, landings and under desks, the 330AC-CM kit adds a 15 ft hose and a 10 inch stainless steel wand.
Can I use the Comet on hard floors or tile?
No. The Comet is a carpet-only machine. If you need one machine for carpet and grouted tile or sealed hard floors, choose the Fivestar 411TR, which has a solution control valve with a second flow setting for hard surfaces.
How much carpet can I clean on one fill?
The bucket holds 3 gallons of solution. On a normal extraction pass that covers roughly 150 to 250 square feet of commercial carpet before you refill, more if you're only doing spots and traffic lanes. Refilling takes a minute: lift the bucket off, empty the bladder at a sink or drain, refill the solution side and drop it back on.
What does the EDIC warranty cover on the Comet?
EDIC covers the Comet for 2 years on parts and labor and gives a lifetime warranty on the polyethylene body and tanks. Wear items such as the belt, brush, cord, hoses, gaskets and switches are excluded, as is damage from freezing, dry vacuuming or non-approved chemicals. The Fivestar carries a 5 year parts and labor warranty; if the machine will run every day, that difference is worth the extra money.
What power does the Comet need?
A standard grounded 120 V, 15 amp outlet; the Comet draws 10 amps. It ships with a 25 ft cord. If you need an extension cord, EDIC specifies a 12 gauge, three-wire cord no longer than 25 ft.
What maintenance does the Comet need?
After every use, flush a gallon of clean hot water through the pump and spray nozzle for about a minute so detergent doesn't build up, rinse the lid filter screen and bucket, and clear lint from the brush and vacuum shoe. Spray the quick-connect coupler with silicone lubricant now and then, always use defoamer in the bladder, never use water hotter than 140°F, and store it where it can't freeze. Two screws open the body for anything deeper.
Can I use the Comet as a dry vacuum?
No. It has no fine dust filter, and dry vacuuming will damage the vacuum motor and void the warranty. Vacuum the carpet with an upright or backpack vacuum first, then extract.
Which cleaning chemicals can I use?
Any low-foam carpet extraction detergent made for hot water extraction machines, mixed to the label, plus a defoamer in the recovery bladder. EDIC says not to use dyes, bleaches, ammonia or other additives, and to fully dissolve powdered detergents, which can damage the pump if they're not.
